UNITS IN THE ICT DIRECTORATE

Network Infrastructure Unit

The Networking unit is in charge of planning, designing, deploying, maintaining and securing network and ICT infrastructure in the Polytechnic. The unit boasts of experienced and professional Engineers, Scientists and Technicians armed with diverse knowledge in network design, configuration and deployment using industry standard equipment and tools, Server configuration using both Linux and Windows Operating System, Wireless design and optimization etc.

Activities of the Network Infrastructure Unit

The Networking Unit activities extend over the following duties:

  1. Network Administration and Infrastructure Management: Network Operating Center (NOC) management; which include effective cooling of equipment and operation of data center. Extension, maintenance and troubleshoot of Fiber Optic backbone network. Setup, administration, maintenance and troubleshooting of all devices for the delivery of Internet services.

    Management and Configuration of IP addresses, Authentication Server, DMZ server and DNS hosting.

  2. Deployment, installation and maintenance of server to host the Polytechnic Portal and Websites.

  3. Day to day networking activities

SOFTWARE Unit

Responsible for the development and maintenance of in-house software for college administration (student Portal, e-screening portal, payment portal, the ERP and result processing software), The Software Units is charged with the following duties:

  1. Software System Troubleshooting.
  2. Routine Management of In-house application software.
  3. Helpdesk administration for various challenging IT related cases.
  4. Identifying training needs of the College.
  5. Organizing training for staff.
  6. Developing business rules for automating College processes.
  7. Identifying the programming needs of the college.
  8. Design, Development and Maintenance of FPNO Website.
  9. Development and maintenance of application software.
  10. Maintenance of the Polytechnic official social network accounts.
  11. Web development of School Subdomains, Service and Academic units.
  12. Cyber & Information Security.
  13. Search Engine Optimizations.
  14. Mobile App development for Publicity Unit (Fedponek News).
  15. Staff ID card portal and Staff Profile.
  16. Management of the polytechnic Email system.

  17. Creation of backend application to enable easy modification of the website.
  18. Record update for schools, departments, service units and academic units.
  19. Management of Polytechnic Database, backup and recovery utilities.

As part of efforts to entrench use of technology and encourage digital information processing and records in the Polytechnic, the Software unit subdivision has designed, developed and deployed a number of software and enhance performance.

HARDWARE Unit

Responsible for the effective improvement of the functionality, performance and life span of Computer Systems / Equipment in the Polytechnic as follows:

  1. Certification and Distributions of personal computer and the peripherals {i.e. printer, scanner etc. to all computer Laboratory department sections and units of the Polytechnic.
  2. To maximize support efficiencies, only certain models of computers from supported manufacturers should be patronized.
  3. Responsible for backups and recovery procedures for application, including hardware and Software
  4. Involved in the purchase of hardware and Software {IT infrastructure procurement and Control} for the Polytechnic.
  5. Serve as an authorized warranty service to the Polytechnic.
  6. Carryout new installation of all distributed computer/accessories, setting them for both staff and students.
  7. Maintaining all the installed systems in every section of the Polytechnic by carrying out predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance as the case may be.
  8. Repairs and servicing of all PCs
  9. Documenting the hardware and Software related problems and solutions for future reference.
  10. Enhancement of current system as authorized when upgrades become available.
  11. Providing assistance to users who have challenges in using some applications and computer peripherals operation.
  12. Attend to both wireless and wired internet connectivity challenges for students, and report major faults to the network administrator.
  13. Also troubleshoot network challenges and connectivity problems, and also system visibility challenges on the network.

MIS Unit

The Management Information System (MIS) Unit is one of the units in ICT saddled with the following responsibilities.

  1. Management of all students’ data in the polytechnic
  2. Issuing of I.D cards to students and staff of the polytechnic.
  3. Provision of required information to Polytechnic Management for decision-making.

TRAINING Unit

The training division of the Directorate is responsible for planning and coordinating both internal and external Information Communication Technology (ICT) based trainings and workshops for the Polytechnic. It is the geared towards bridging the digital gap and has well-equipped laboratories at the Oracle Lab, Amerciacan Embassy, TEDC lab, NDDC  Laboratories and more, respectively.

The division collaborates with professional partners such as the NITDA, IBM Academy, CISCO Academy, ZINOX Technologies, etc. to achieve its mandate. It has also engaged in carrying out training of less privileged in emirate councils and public senior secondary schools students as part of the Polytechnic’s Corporate Social Responsibility.
